Follow the steps below to learn how to make origami paper.
Most of the time, people starting out with origami will use an 8½x11 sheet and they’ll find out that almost all origami require a square paper. On this page, I’ll show you how to make origami paper using a regular 8×11 paper.
But if you want paper that’s easier to fold with an end product that looks nice and clean, you should get some origami paper.
Another alternative is to simply download printable origami paper and cut them out. The upside is that you’ll have a nice design on one side, but the thickness and “foldability” will be the same as regular paper.
Step 1: Have a piece of paper ready.
Step 2: Fold the upper left corner down to the right side, creasing at the upper right corner. Make sure it’s pointy.
Step 3: Fold the pointy right corner down the the left side, meeting the previously creased corner.
Step 4: Fold the bottom rectangle flap up and behind the triangle, then use your fingernails to run along the crease to get it ready for tearing.
Step 5: Unfold the bottom flap.
Step 6: Unfold everything.
Step 7: Now you want to separate the bottom flap from the rest of the paper so you can end up with a square origami paper. Do that by cutting the flap with a scissor, or tearing it with your hands.
A good technique to tear is to place the paper on a table and press down on the square with one hand while tearing the rectangle flap with the other.
Step 8: Now you know how to make origami paper!
