Difficulty: Medium

Wow, this origami cat is one of the best looking I’ve ever seen that’s not too difficult to fold. Maybe I’m biased since I designed it, but it really is pretty. I chose black because black cats are spooky and cool, but also because I need an excuse to use all the black origami paper I have.

I wouldn’t consider this origami cat easy if you have no experience at all. In fact, some folds may require a couple of attempts to get right, but they’re not impossible. You’ll have fun folding this figure and you’ll have fun with it after you’re done.

Step 1: Start with a square piece of origami paper. If you only have regular 8.5×11 paper,
follow these instructions to make a square sheet.

Step 2: Fold the paper in half by folding the left corner to the right corner.

Step 3: Unfold.

Step 4: Fold the upper left and right sides to the center as shown.

Step 5: Now fold the bottom left and right sides to the center.

Step 6: Fold in half by folding the bottom corner to the top.

Step 7: Fold most (not all) of the flap back down.

Step 8: Here’s one of the tricky folds. Open the pocket on the left side and squash down while folding the left side of the triangle to the center.

You may need to adjust the pocket and it’s okay if it’s not perfect.

Step 9: Do the same to the right side. Now we have a thinner triangle.

Step 10: Fold the figure in half by folding the right side over to the left.

Step 11: Fold the thin triangle to the right. This is the tail.
Pin

Step 12: Unfold the tail. All we need is the crease for the next step.
Pin

Step 13: Outside reverse fold the tail. Do this by opening the figure and bending the tail up along the creases you just made. Now close the figure and crease the sides in.

Step 14: Fold the bottom corner up, but maker sure the base lines up with the base of the tail.

Step 15: Do the same for the other side.

Step 16: Beginning at the corner of the foot, open up the body as shown.

Step 17: Fold down the top as shown.

Step 18: Fold the flap up and flatten well.

Step 19: Here’s another tricky fold. Open the top flap, fold down, and crease the sides. Your figure should look like the third picture in this step.

Step 20: Turn the figure over.

Step 21: Fold in the corners of the “neck”.

Step 22: Turn the figure over again to the front.

Step 23: With your fingernail, push in the middle of the top of the head and crease the front edges. The top should look like the second picture in this step.

Step 24: Fold the bottom corner of the face up to form the nose.

Step 25: Unfold the feet a little so that they’re perpendicular with the floor. This will allow the cat to stand.

Step 26: Twirl the tail and you’re done!
