Origami Pelican Instructions and Diagrams

Follow the steps below to make this Origami Pelican.
Difficulty: Easy

The origami pelican is easy to make and fun to fold. The final piece should be able to sit up thanks to the wings on the side to hold it steady.

Usually you would fold this with the whiter side up first so the origami pelican will be more colorful from head to wing, but I decided to be a little adventerous and rebellious by being realistic.

See, the real pelicans are white with dark colors at the tip of the wings and sometimes at its rear end. However, I think going the other way would have made it look better.

Step 1: Get out your favorite origami paper. If you only have regular 8.5×11 paper, follow these instructions to make a square sheet.

Step 2: Fold the left corner to the right corner. Make sure it’s straight down the middle.

Step 3: Unfold the paper so we can have the crease in the middle.

Step 4: Fold the lower half of both sides to line up with the center.

Step 5: Fold the lower of half of both sides to the center again.

Step 6: Turn the figure over.

Step 7: Fold the bottom corner to the top corner. Don’t worry about the dark color in the picture, it’s just the shadow.

Step 8: Fold the figure in half from left to right.

Step 9: Rotate the figure counter-clockwise 90 degree.

Step 10: Gently pull up the wedge from inside and crease at the base so that it settles in that position.

Step 11: Do an inside reverse fold to form the head. To do this, open the wedge from the front and bend it from about 2/5ths from the top (like the 1st image in this step), then pinch both sides together so the head will reverse fold inside (like the 2nd image in this step).

Step 12: Fold the wings on both sides up to line up with the top of the pelican’s body.

Step 13: Unfold the wings until they’re perpendicular from the body so that it can serve as stands for the pelican. You’re done!
